Gangadhar Meher

Gangadhar Meher (1862–1924) was a renowned Odia poet, popularly known as "Swabhaba Kavi" (The Natural Poet) for his simple yet profound expressions rooted in nature, culture, and human life. Born in Barpali, a small town in present-day Bargarh district of Odisha, Meher hailed from a weaver family, which deeply influenced his poetic sensibilities.
Despite limited formal education, Gangadhar Meher emerged as a literary genius, contributing significantly to Odia literature during a transitional period. His works reflect a seamless harmony between classical tradition and modern sensibilities, making him one of the key figures in Odia Renaissance literature.
